Theses are just some inspiration ideas I think you should work on coordinating the entire kitchen breakfast area and the great room. When that is done then coordinate the three areas with a unifying color and a choice to two accents color so the area can be seen as one total designed room. You could cut into the wall if you want them deeper, but they will hold a lot no matter what the depth.

After that I would install floor to ceiling closed cabinets, maybe with frosted or reeded glass doors on either side of the fireplace. On the other hand I would agree that the dining set is a bit cluttery looking.I would choose faux leather or fabric upholstered chairs in a fun color to modernized the look. Something like this but in your cabinet style and stain. It will raise the ceiling and will give the kitchen a newer look. If you really want to spend more then have glass faced cabinets made for the soffit area with lights. I would literally die for your kitchen! But I hear your pain.but that said the kitchen is lovely and practical and is working for you.Paint the ceiling and the kitchen for a more unified look and replace the lights to a more modern mood. You're putting a lot of thought into this - your guests will appreciate it. A colourful cushion or two, or a throw, would brighten things up and still fit with your esthetic, though. Perhaps another wall? I'd personally prefer a more colorful bed spread, but as a guest, I'd hardly be put off by the one you have there. I like the bison, but maybe not over the bed - makes it look a bit cold in that corner, whereas the vanity is quite warm. I am not crazy about the sheepskin, but that's a personal thing. (Somehow, 'traveling light' ain't what it used to be). I do think there's a bit too much stuff still on the little dresser and nightstand- were I the guest, I'd like most of that space clear for my glasses case, mobile phone, my box of kleenex, my book, my pillbox and my tablet. Provide your guest with those, and they should be pretty content. A chair to sit on if there's room, oh, and a spare blanket in case it gets chilly at night (probably not a huge issue in LA, though). Speaking as someone who has been a frequent guest in other people's houses, and has had frequent guests in mine, I figure the following things are top priority: a really good mattress for the bed, a few empty drawers to stuff things in, along with some hanging space in a closet (and somewhere to put the suitcase) a mirror a bowl to drop keys and mobile phones in and somewhere near the bed to deposit the spectacles. So, to get back to the original question. OP - this thread seems to have gone a bit off the rails.

If you wish not to keep up with it, might I suggest something more care free like floating/glue down vinyl plank or tile that mimics hardwood. Aluminum oxide or any other manufactured finish from the manufacturer can be repaired by a skilled wood mechanic or have the boards replaced. Urethane floors can be refinished down the road, years later. Oiled floors are more forgiving over time due to the re-oiling processes. With any floor scratches and dents will happen. Using the correct cleaners will keep your floor healthy and lust. Doing so could create a haze that either has to be walked off or replaced. On oil and aluminum oxide finishes should not be cleaned with a product that has a wax or polish in it. It's recommended to wipe up any spills, from any product, immediately. The acidics in the vomit could damage the finish on either oil, urethane or aluminum oxide if allowed to sit for a long period of time.
